This year, universities ordered print runs of the customised LearnHigher academic year planner 2013/14. For all those who are not studying at the universities who ordered them… the University of Reading had some extras printed and have made them available on our online shop.
We have been working with SAGE Publications to create an academic year planner for 2013/14. The planner distributed through campus bookshops shows a range of SAGE study guides including the latest edition of Essential Study Skills: The Complete Guide to Success at University – for more information click here.
Now in their second edition, the Bloodhound SSC Engineering Design sheets have been used in a special workshop run by the BHssc Education Team – the event also launched the opening of the project’s new HQ in Bristol earlier this month. These bespoke Foldedsheets have facts, photographs and drawings about the project, in addition to plenty of space for young design teams to make their mark. The workshop’s design brief was Living and Operating in the Desert. The sheets were judged by members of the South African delegation from the Northern Cape Provincial Government, Dept. of Tourism and prizes were awarded for the best designs.

Geologist extraordinaire Sophy Crosby sent us this excellent map made by pupils at Coldfall Primary in London, using one of our Drawing sheets. This was part of a creative ‘Rock Club’ workshop run by Sophy, that looked at the presence of geology in our everyday surroundings – brilliant!
We have just produced an exhibition publication with Fieldwork Folio – the large-scale mapping project uses our Foldedsheet poster format. The publication documents a series of journeys in the Ironbridge Gorge, Shropshire.
The folks at off-grid eco-retreat Los Gazquez sent us a photo of their planner in action…
Lala Thorpe, manager and workshop leader at Artescape, used a Giant Foldedsheet with Yuri Suzuki, a sound artist, designer and electronic musician. Lala was “inspired” to invite him following a talk at the Arts Catalyst Kosmica night…
“Kids at Artescape working on the giant folded sheet… finally dared to unwrap the beauty!! I invited Yuri Suzuki to talk to the kids about his work and demonstrate one of his designs. They all loved it… he had a thing called a Colour Chaser which followed a drawn black line and then responded to different colours drawn in its path with sound.”

Again this year, universities shared a print run of the LearnHigher Generic academic year planner 2012/13. For all those who are not studying at the universities who ordered them… we had some extras printed and have added them to our online shop.
The Bloodhound SSC Engineering Design sheets have been put to good use already with several schools taking part. Inspiring interest in STEM subjects through this open source engineering project, resources have been created to encourage teamwork and creativity. KS3 pupils in teams of up to four, have been using the blank areas on the sheet to make drawings of their design thinking. Information printed on the sheet is used in conjunction with a range of different design briefs.
The Institution of Mechanical Engineers are sponsoring the BLOODHOUND SSC Education Programme with two new Foldedsheet resources: the Engineering Design sheet and the Activity sheet. The Education Programme are developing these sheets for schools working in STEM subjects at KS2 and KS3, and young people interested in science, technology, engineering and maths. The Engineering Design sheet encourages small groups working in classroom teams to solve design briefs set by the Bloodhound Project, and the Activity sheet encourages younger individuals to discover facts about the Bloodhound engineering at various events.

Today, Haslemere Educational Museum was announced as the winner of the Telegraph Family Friendly Museum Award 2012. In addition to a shiny plaque recognising their achievements, they also receive a box of 125 of our Storyboard sheets – which they intend to use for one of their family history events this year! Further details about the award can be found on the Kids in Museums website.
We have just produced an exhibition publication with Fieldwork Folio – the large-scale mapping project uses our Foldedsheet poster format. The publication documents a series of journeys using the Saxon Shore Way in Kent.
Artist Luce Choules, working with the Faversham Sea Cadets, used a Giant Foldedsheet to map part of the Saxon Shore Way around Faversham Creek. The drawing part of the map is complete, but the whole map is a work in progress. The cadets documented parts of the SS Way using photography to capture points of interest along the creek. They will add more of their photographs over the coming months to fill the sheet during their 70th year anniversary celebrations. The map formed part of the exhibition ‘Tide′ at Creek Creative, Faversham in March 2012.

We have just produced a double-sided full-colour sheet for explorer Alastair Humphreys – he may be a well-seasoned traveller, but this is the first mappazine Alastair has commissioned…
There Are Other Rivers: One Day on the Road/On Foot in India is a photographic journey interspersed with insights and thoughts. Alastair Humphreys walked across southern India, following a holy river from the ocean to its source and then down to the other coast. Travelling alone, immersing himself in fresh experiences, the adventure provided time to reflect on his long fascination with the open road. Humphreys explores two different themes: the allure of difficult journeys and the repeating rhythm of each individual day.

Every year for the past five years, we have sponsored the expeditions and fieldwork planning event Explore, held annually at the Royal Geographical Society (with IBG) with our Foldedsheet year-to-view planners. This year we were asked to run the Communicating Your Discoveries advice desks in the Education Centre at the society, and gathered together over twenty explorers during the weekend to advise delegates on how to communicate their discoveries before, during and after their expeditions.
We showed a range of Foldedsheets – the mappazines Ken360 and PROfile in addition to Confluences from the Editions series. Emily Penn brought some of her brilliant expedition sketchbooks, Andy Welch brought his Wandermap work, and among other books we showed Arita Baaijens’ very lovely Desert Songs. We also had access to the data-projector, where we were able to show examples of websites, blogs and tweets. The main advice desk contributors were: Luce Choules, Emily Penn, Andy Welch, Jamie Buchanan-Dunlop, Geordie Torr, Al Humphreys, Tom Kevill-Davies, Tom Allen and Tim Moss. Speakers taking part in the main lecture programme and workshops over the weekend also gathered around the desks to share their experience in photography, writing and various forms of social media. It was a fantastic weekend – the best in the five years we have been there – Digital Explorer Jamie Buchanan-Dunlop summed up the event in his recent post here.

A big box of our Foldedsheets are travelling to New York next week to the Thinking Through Drawing interdisciplinary symposium at Teachers College Columbia University in New York on the 28–29th October 2011. Drawing sheets will be used in the practical workshops, and Storyboard sheets are included in the delegate’s packs for artists, scientists and academics to make notes and drawings on during the symposium.
“This two day interdisciplinary symposium brings together artists, cognitive scientists and art educators to consider the relationships between drawing and cognition. Researchers across geographical and disciplinary borders will address how recent findings from cognitive psychology and neurosciences can inform arts education, with a particular emphasis on drawing. The symposium will offer a rare opportunity for academics from drawing research, psychology, neuroscience, computer science and art education to present and discuss the relevance of their research findings to each others’ research and practice.
This symposium grew out of discussions on drawing and cognition, which began at the Drawing Research Network’s 2010 conference, between Angela Brew (UAL), Michelle Fava (Loughborough), and Andrea Kantrowitz (Teachers College).”
We ran a practical workshop at the Drawing Research Network conference in Brighton last year using our Drawing sheets (more info here), which allowed participants to discover the potential of mapping their projects, thoughts and ideas on these large-format sheets.
Sarah Plumb, Project Manager: Learning and Partnerships at Modern Art Oxford, used a Giant Foldedsheet over the weekend in the gallery’s ‘Mapping Memory’ event…
“The Big Draw event was very successful with over 40 people attending between 12-4pm. The paper worked fantastically well in the space and during the workshop, led by artist Bram Arnold.”
The gallery’s event was part of the Campaign for Drawing’s ‘Big Draw 2011’. Inspired by the Kerry Tribe and Abraham Cruzvillegas exhibitions, the event encouraged participants to create a giant map of Oxford from memory.

Lucy Steggals has been using our Storyboard sheets for the film project Dovertime. The sheets were used to storyboard elements of the film which were made over several episodes.
One sheet was also used inside Nicole Mollett’s airstream Cultural Baton, for comments and feedback from Dovertime participants and the audience at the special preview screening event, shown on the BBC Live Screen in the market square Dover on Saturday 17th September.
Throughout the project, other Foldedsheets were used for planning and drawing.

Jodie Henshaw, Development Officer at Mansfield Museum, has just returned from a Sure Start Family Open Day where they used their Giant Foldedsheet today…
“This took place on a very sunny school field in the heart of Mansfield. I took the folded piece of paper with me and invited the families to add themselves to the paper to create a giant mural. The kids had a wonderful time, drawing, cutting and sticking!”
The event was part of the museum’s ‘Mega Mural’ in National Families Week.

We have added another notemap to our range – the Storyboard sheet. This has 60 generously-sized frames arranged over a sheet nearly a metre wide and tall – a welcome addition to the Drawing, Writing and Planning sheets.

King’s College London used one of our Big Foldedsheets for an event linked to the Strandlines project. The sheet was used to record participants thoughts and comments on the day including text and images – they measure 2400 x 2100mm and are made from strong archival drawing paper. Images from the Strandlines Creative Day can be seen here, and the map will be displayed at an event which is planned for March / April 2012.
Turner Contemporary is open and the Etagram wall drawing has been installed. This map has been made by the intergenerational group Blank Canvas on one of our new Giant Foldedsheets…
Arts educator Lala Thorpe has been using our Drawing sheets with her Artescape group in north London and sent us some great photos of the kids creating Dream Maps…
“Artescape is an out-of hours art club based in Islington for primary age children, which runs during term time on Saturdays, based at William Tyndale School, in the Morris Building. It is open to children who live and/or go to school in Islington. Artescape has been running since 1999 and for the past 4 years is led and managed by Lala Thorpe, a qualified teacher and arts project manager with the support of assistant teacher Lorraine McCourt.
Since 2005 Lala and Lorraine have led a diverse range of term based workshops on a huge variety of topics, looking at artists both contemporary and historical as well as art from around the world. Teaching a range of skills and approaches to making and creating many different art forms, such as sculpture, drawing, painting, printmaking, textiles, and clay work. Artescape aims to encourage children to bring their own ideas and interests as well as provide opportunities to experience a wide range of materials and allow all children to access different approaches to making art work, whether it be 2D or 3D. Each term, every child makes a portfolio of work around a topic.
We are currently developing ideas for a website and extending our workshops to other community groups and schools for one-off and holiday activities.”

We delivered two of our new Giant Foldedsheets to Turner Contemporary in Margate last week. One of the sheets is being used by artist Lucy Steggals with the intergenerational group Blank Canvas, who are staging a huge project to celebrate the opening of the Learning Studio at this prestigious new gallery.
Made of 315gsm archival acid free drawing paper, these enormous sheets measure in at 2.4 x 4m! The folded size of these sheets are 80 x 120cm – which means they can be folded away to be archived and stored after they have been used… or perhaps they could go on tour! To get an idea of the size of the sheets…

and when the sheets are unfolded they take up the space of 9 large tables!
For the second year running, we are supporting the Kids in Museums Manifesto launch by providing every guest with one of our Drawing and Planning sheets. This year the event is held at the London Transport Museum.
We have been working with High Sports Group – a company with nearly twenty climbing walls located in London and south-east England. We customised one of our year-to-view templates to produce a small digital print run of planners to show an overview of marketing activity across the company.
We presented a research poster and ran a workshop for the Drawing Research Network conference at the University of Brighton this week. The workshop Off the Map: unfolding narratives and new territories introduced participants to our range of notemaps and a practical session which used the Drawing sheets.
The notemaps provide a format to open up your thinking and allow information to be added as projects develop – not confining large thought processes to small sketchbooks. The large sheet of paper allows plenty of room for making notes and new connections between ideas, recording thinking and developing layers of communication through mapping in order to realise complex works and projects.
The workshop was intended to be a catalyst for mapping ideas and using visual notation and participants were asked to think of a current project they were working on. They were each given a Drawing sheet to start a map of this thinking and grow their ideas through drawing, words, diagrams and symbols – anything that visually described aspects of their project. Quickly, the participants were using the sheets intuitively – large and small handwritten type, expressive and conceptual drawings, neat and messy marks, arrows, circles, lines and boxes. Soon, the huge blank sheets of paper were transformed into eclectic individual resources loaded with information, and we hope the participants continue to develop their new mapping on the sheet after the conference.
The A1 research poster showed all the notemaps we have produced so far, text detailing each sheet and a list of our project partners.
We have had many organisations using the Drawing sheets including: primary school kids mapping environmental biodiversity, teachers planning GCSE revision timetables and LearnHigher CETL Big Draw events in Brighton and Falmouth. Please get in touch with us directly if you wish to purchase a large number of the sheets for education projects (between 50–450 sheets), or to commission a sheet (minimum order 1,000 sheets).

This year we had six universities sharing a print run of the LearnHigher Generic academic year planner 2010/11 – nearly 10,000 were printed! For all those who are not studying at the universities who ordered them… we had some extras printed and have added them to our online shop.
We have now produced more than 100,000 of our Foldedsheet publications – which include editions, mappazines, notemaps and planners. So far, our smallest print run is 500, most of our work ranges from 1,000–5,000 units, and our largest run is 12,000. We have produced single-colour, 2, 3, 4 and 5-colour work, single and double-sided publications. We now have six established finished format sizes in our range and this number is growing with each new project – we have come a long way.
We would like to take this opportunity to thank all our partners for these projects – the best products have been collaborative and informed, and would not have been possible without the expertise, support and hard graft of everyone involved in the process! We look forward to working with many more inspiring people and forward-thinking organisations on the journey ahead – we have much to do.

In the next academic year, nearly 35,000 students will be managing their time effectively at university!
We will be producing a German-language version of the LearnHigher planner 2010/11 with Universität Wien, Austria. The planner is based on the original English-language version developed by LearnHigher. For the translation work involved to produce the new German-language option, the University of Vienna have recently been appointed as an ‘Associate’ of LearnHigher.
We are supporting the Kids in Museums Manifesto launch by providing every guest with one of our Drawing and Writing sheets. The event is being held at The British Museum, London.
We thought you might like a preview of the new Activity sheet we designed for Kids in Museums. Five hundred of these sheets, containing spaces for drawing and writing, are destined for the winner of The Guardian Family Friendly Museum Award 2009. It will be interesting for us to see what kinds of projects the museum or gallery uses the sheets for, and fun to see how the kids interact with them. The Activity sheet is smaller in size than our Drawing sheets and Writing sheets, but still contains enough space to make some really big scribblings!

The exhibition Postcards from Canvey Island is a showcase of work created during Vanessa Rolf’s residency at Cornelius Vermuyden School, Essex. The exhibition will include maps and drawings by students from the four Canvey Island schools involved in the project. “I hope to get a chance to use the drawing sheets again in the future – the kids loved working on them“.

Vanessa Rolf is an artist in residence working with several schools in Canvey Island, Essex. The project involves exploring the island through maps and drawing, Vanessa will be using 100 of our drawing sheets throughout the project.

“Canvey Island is an interesting area, it is at great risk of flooding as it sits lower than sea level, it has amazing salt marshes and a nature reserve that is home to the most diverse population of insects in Western Europe and many rare and endangered species as well as having some great faded amusement arcades.”

We have been working with LH researchers in Time Management for nearly two years now, developing a range of visual planning resources for students in Higher Education. Next month, Michelle Reid (University of Reading) and Pauline Ridley (University of Brighton) of the LearnHigher CETL will be making a presentation titled Visualising the future: creating new paper-based resources at the LDHEN symposium. We have just printed a new (promo) planner for LearnHigher, using a similar template to the 2008/9 Generic version (see earlier posts, or check out the Tumblr archive for more details). However, this one has been updated to include three double-height panels of ‘Top Tips’ from the 20 learning areas of LearnHigher. The planner has been requested by, and distributed to, nearly 60 universities across the UK. This is part of LearnHigher research and development at the University of Reading – see www.learnhigher.ac.uk for more details of this project. The 2009/10 LearnHigher planner template is also in the final stages of development, details of which will be released soon.
This academic planner has been developed in conjunction with the University of Brighton and the University of Reading as part of the LearnHigher CETL.
We now have a NEW Tumblr site, where you can view all Foldedsheet publications. Here, you can see the layouts for all sheets with the publishing info for each project. You can also use the ARCHIVE section if you wish to view individual sheets. This site will be added to with each new commission or project.

Alongside the Guardian and Quentin Blake, Foldedsheet are supporting the charity Kids in Museums. We will be producing a special edition Activity Sheet notemap for the winner of the Guardian’s Family Friendly Museum Award.
The Kids in Museums Manifesto, along with the Guardian’s Family Friendly Museum Award have been incredibly successful ways of encouraging and guiding museums and galleries across the country to make family visits engaging and enjoyable.
This evening, the Kids in Museums Manifesto 2009 will be launched at the Royal Academy of Arts, London – we have supplied a number of our Drawing Sheets and Writing Sheets to be distributed at this event.

Pilot Scheme: foldedsheet Academic Year-to-View Planners 2008/9
Over the next few weeks we are gathering feedback and comments from the four universities involved in our pilot scheme: Royal College of Art, Central St. Martins College of Art and Design, University College Falmouth and Trinity College of Music. A total of 700 foldedsheet Academic Year-to-View planners were distributed to their students in September 2008.
We are looking forward to hearing their views.
Critical feedback and user comments are very important to our process of research and development. The Universities involved in the pilot scheme are part of this process, their feedback will provide the ideas and inspiration to refine and improve the 2009/10 version of the planner.
All feedback welcomed, honest appraisal of the planners will really help in the development of this resource. There is always room for improvement and through the pilot scheme we hope students and staff will be generous and thoughtful with their opinions and comments.
We have just uploaded some images to our NEW Flickr site, use the link on the left hand side with the title PHOTO ARCHIVE to view them in sets. The site has been set up as a place to show how Foldedsheets have been used. There are a few pics of our own worksheets and project plans to start the site off… now we need to see how you have used yours!

The Greengaged event at the Design Council ran from the 15-23 September, 2008. It was a packed programme of movers and shakers in the sustainable design circles.
We attended the Friday event ‘Walk it, Talk it’ led by Three Trees Don’t Make a Forest, which was an inspiring mix of knowledge-sharing and networking. The workshop focussed on design decisions and environmental considerations for print processes and sustainable papers. In amongst a huge amount of information, the speakers praised the use of folded formats – no staples, glue, stitching or threads to get in the way of the recycling process.

THE SCHEME
Four Higher Education Art Institutions will pilot our Foldedsheet year planners, these will be distributed to undergraduate and postgraduate students. The universities will receive over 100 planners each, enabling 700 students to visually map their time at university this academic year. Project planning, assessment deadlines, work schedules, important appointments and lectures can all be ‘mapped’ on the planner.

Our planners have plenty of room to jot down appointments, a large weekly overview section and lots of space for notes. Carry it around with you like a diary, stick it up on the wall to see what your whole year looks like, or if you are a bit short of space fold your planner and secure with a clip to view two months at a time instead…
you can also fold it to see six months to view, use it as a personal notice board, apply colour-coded stickers, add post-it notes, stick reminders and scraps to it, use highlighter pens, hang it from a clip, tape it to the wall, fold and re-fold it… to work out how your big ideas and projects can be organised.
For over 30 years, the Royal Geographical Society in London have hosted the premier event for expedition & fieldwork planning. For the second year running, we are showing our support to this fantastic 3-day event by supplying each delegate with one of our 2009 year planners.
PANEL SPEAKER
This year, Luce has been invited to speak at one of the workshops during the weekend event. She will be part of the Photography panel advising delegates about the documentation of visual information. In addition, we will have a display of our PROfile mappazines at the Society headquarters in Kensington, London.

Textures of Time: landscape architecture is an investigation of the exposed surfaces created through mineral extraction at key localities around Sussex. Looking at the connection of these sites to geology, archaeology andhistory, Chivers’ work draws our attention, not only to the physical appearance of the rocks, but also to what lies beyond the surface, as each image has the potential for discovery.

We have been working with LearnHigher Time Management researchers at the University of Reading, to produce a suite of academic year planners with 6 universities in the LearnHigher partnership. LearnHigher also provides a diverse range of online learning resources available to students – our initial contact came through the University of Brighton, who lead the Visual Practices area.
The Generic version (or template LearnHigher planner) will be piloted with 3 of the LearnHigher partner institutions: Manchester Metropolitan University, Nottingham Trent University and Plymouth University, who will all receive 500 each to pilot with a focus group of students.
The image above shows the Generic version, which carries the LearnHigher branding and information about the LearnHigher partnership, including details of web-links to LearnHigher services. This was then modified for three of the LearnHigher partner universities, with university branding, local information, department services, and university or course related dates.
The planner for the University of Reading, uses some modification of the LearnHigher template with logo placement and local info/services added. All students at Reading (10,000) will receive these at the beginning of term…
The University of Brighton, in addition to logo placement and local info/services, also opted to show a visual weekly time-line. All first year students (7,500) will receive one each in their induction week…
Liverpool Hope University opted for logo placement, local info/services, a visual weekly time-line, and the greatest level of modification, including a colour change and course-related details within the daily sections to assist students in planning their time. All level C students (3,000) will receive the planner at the start of term…

Luce Choules’ photographic study ‘Flow: Edit.’ was commissioned by Birmingham-based FusionPlus as part of their Art & Sport projects programme. The project involved deaf athlete Nicola Hewish of Ironbridge Rowing Club in the Midlands, and Choules’ documentation of her sport. The resulting images are published here as a record of quiet moments witnessed during the busy training sessions. The publication also includes ‘Field Work: Editorial Cartography’ – a selection of images produced from trips and expeditions in the last six years.

Explorer’s Drawing and Writing sheets were commissioned by the Brunei Gallery for Julia Winckler’s Retracing Heinrich Barth exhibition. The sheets were used as part of the education programme. School groups, college students and members of the public were encouraged to use them during visits and workshops in the gallery space. The sheets were produced to inspire visitors to map their experiences of the exhibition in pictures and words.

With combined interests in African studies, Anthropology and Photography Winckler journeyed to Niger to follow in the footsteps of 19th century German explorer Heinrich Barth. The publication documents the artist’s personal impressions, includes exhibition commentary from Adrienne Chambon, and features the community photography project ‘Stories from Agadez: Life as it is Now’.

Marysa Dowling’s photographic study ‘The Movement of an Object’ was commissioned by The Photographers’ Gallery as part of their off-site project programme. The project involved a collaborative process between thirty individuals across London and the passage of a single banal object between them. The resulting series of images are published here, alongside these intriguing portraits are essays by Chris Townsend and Helen James and a selection of Dowling’s other work.

We were commissioned to produce a half-year pilot planner with ‘Study Tips’ supplied by time management researchers in the Centre for Excellence in Teaching and Learning at the University of Reading. The university is one of the partners for LearnHigher, a consortium of 16 universities who share best practice in diverse areas of student learning.
One thousand students at the University received a planner in January 2008. Their feedback and comments will be collected and a full academic year planner will be produced for LearnHigher institutions in 2008/09.
Drawing-a-Day foldedsheets were specially commissioned for the BigDraw@Brighton and University College Falmouth. Both events were organised in association with the Campaign for Drawing and LearnHigher Centre for Excellence in Teaching and Learning.

TheBigDraw@Brighton is a chance to explore and share the role that drawing plays in each discipline and to discover new uses: improving observation skills, reinforcing memory, generating and communicating ideas or mapping structures. The Drawing-a-Day map is a different way of exploring your visual thinking and it’s as easy to use as a regular sketchbook. You can still concentrate on one panel at a time – what’s different is that you can also spread the sheet out to display a whole sequence. Strong enough to fold and re-fold as often as you like, the sheet contains enough blank sections for just over a month’s worth of daily drawings.

We commissioned Owen Rutter – a genius designer/maker – to produce a display stand for us. The challenge was to make a lightweight, durable, flat-pack stand. The result was these beautifully simple units that can hold fifteen sheets. The stands can be assembled in two configurations are are made from sustainable birch faced ply, the foldedsheet logo has been branded onto both sides of the unit.
The foldedsheet project was initially developed during a Masters degree in 2004. Informed by research into editorial layouts, information mapping and design responsibility the projects’ aim was to create a new form of sustainable publishing.
The concept was formally launched in the summer of 2005 with the publication of ‘ken360_000 (pilot issue)’ and the ‘7mm_ruled’ sheets (pictured below). When these first foldedsheets rolled of the press we didn’t know where they would take us or how they would be received… the response has been really positive. Our belief that these huge sheets of paper can provide a useful and interesting format has been confirmed and new products have been added to our range. We are currently working on a number of commissions, and there are lots of exciting projects in development.
First, a big thank you to Shaun Morrison who designed our previous website! After two years of faithful service, we felt our website was desperately in need of an upgrade… so we set about developing a more interactive version.
We have many more products available now and lots of news to share, so we created this new forum to keep you up to date with all our latest Foldedsheet developments. We hope you enjoy our new site.
